Merry Christmas!! Thankfulness Thursday week 52 of 2014 - Finale

Today is December 26th.

I remembered to post yesterday early in the morning and then with all the activities and things to tend to around the house I totally forgot to post.

Today I am thankful for the Lord Jesus that came to save the world.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but to save the world through him. John 3:17

I am also thankful for my family. For the past ten plus years we have celebrated Christmas Day at our house. Since we have the youngest grand kids, we wanted our boys to be able to stay with their gifts on Christmas Day. It means a lot of work for me but it is so worth not having to leave the house (except to pick up my mom and bring her home again). My great grandfather on my mother's side came to America from Germany and we celebrate this heritage by having sauerbraten, red cabbage, and potato pancakes.

The hubby's mom, one of his sisters, her hubby. our youngest and my hubby.

My mom, our oldest, the hubby's other sister, her hubby and the hubby's mom again.

I most likely with not post until sometime in January. Have a Happy New Year!

Thankfulness Thursday Week 51 of 2014

Today I am thankful for my sisters.

I did not have sisters growing up. I had friends that have become lifelong friends and they are stretched from Alaska to Florida.

When I married my husband I gained two sisters. What a blessing they are to me. They are true sisters and we fight just like real siblings. We started meeting once a month for lunch when my oldest was just a baby. I need that girl time being surrounded by the hubby and two boys all the time.

One more week/post to go. Thankfulness Thursday it has stretched me and taught me there is so much to be thankful for.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 50 of 2014

Today is December 11th.

WOW!! I've posted 50 times this past year of things I am thankful for. It has been hard at times and truthfully I am usually not prepared. Does it show? I know it does. Today I am thankful for the friendships I have had over the years. There are a few women that I have known since elementary school that I still keep in contact with. We do not live near each other and do not get to see each other often but always exchange Christmas cards. Since we live in a city that is near an Air Force base there are several people that we send cards to every year like the lady who played the music for our wedding and the neighbors whose children I baby sat. Relationships are important that is why the Lord made us to have relationship with Him and others.

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Genesis 2:18

So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Genesis 2:20

This time of year is hard for many due to relationships that are broken or loss of a loved one. Hold on to your friends and family, forgive and above all else love.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10

Thankfulness Thursday Week 49 of 2014

Today is December 4th.

Today I am thankful for Advent.

Celebrating Advent involves spending time in spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas. In Western Christianity, the season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas Day, or the Sunday which falls closest to November 30, and lasts through Christmas Eve, or December 24.

30 years ago I accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior during Advent. The Lord was with me throughout my young life protecting me and guiding me to Him. I was not raised in a "Christian" home. My dad decided that we should go to church and we went to Wesley United Methodist Church where I was in the children's choir and was an acolyte. We learned Bible stories and did crafts but I do not remember anyone talking to me about a personal relationship with Jesus. After a while I was the only one in my family going to church. We lived about 5 blocks away so I walked there and back each Sunday. Soon I decided that I would rather stay home and watch Shirley Temple movies. Fast forward to my senior year in high school where I attended my dad's wedding to his 3rd wife and was approached by their neighbor and also the associate pastor of College Park Baptist Church about attending church - they even offered to pick me up. After a couple of months I called the neighbor and asked to go. Just 2 or 3 weeks after that the Youth Leader came by my home during the weekly Monday Night Visitation and said "You should come forward." In Southern Baptist churches there is a time at the end of the service where everyone stands and sings a song or hymn and the pastors and leaders or deacons stand in the front to pray with people. I walked that aisle the next Sunday (or maybe I flew), prayed telling Jesus that I was a sinner, asked Him to forgive me and be my personal Lord and savior.

If you are searching for something God may be calling you. I urge you to find a Bible and read the book of John. Here are a few verses to help you know that Christ died for you, He loves you and wants fellowship with you.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Romans 3:23-24

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:9

for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Have a blessed Advent season.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 47 of 2014

Today is Friday November 21st. Yes a day late.

Today I am thankful that Christmas baking and candy making season is finally here.

I spent Sunday morning in church and all afternoon (5 hours) making pumpkin bread, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and strawberry bread. It helped to warm up my house.

Today I made English Toffee.

This candy is my oldest's favorite. He starts asking me as soon as the weather starts to get cooler and after Halloween to make it. This recipe if from my Great Aunt Arlean she was the best baker and sweet maker in our family.

Here is the recipe:

1 cup butter

1 cup sugar

chopped nuts about 1/4 of a cup (I never measure them)

1 XL Hershey bar or 3 regular sized Hershey chocolate bars

Place a sheet of foil on a cookie sheet or metal pizza pan. Butter the foil and sprinkle about half of your chopped nuts on (I use pecans but my Aunt always used toasted almonds).

Using a large pot (I use 3 qt) cook the butter and sugar while stirring (I use a long handled wooden spoon) on high until the color of a brown paper bag (approximately 15 min).

Immediately pour the sugar butter mixture on your cookie sheet a spread a little.

Break up the Hershey bar and put the Hershey side up.

After the chocolate melts spread to within a 1/4 inch of the edge.

Sprinkle with the rest of your nuts.

Now the hard part....waiting for it to cool enough to break into pieces (I usually wait about 8 hours).

Store at room temperature for several weeks.

This is best made when temperatures are in the 40's or less at night. Too hot and the chocolate will not set up.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 46 of 2014

This week we celebrated Veteran's Day.

Thankful this week for those that served, are serving and those that gave all they had in their service.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 45 of 2014

Today is November 6th.

You may remember that I started a Bible Study in September. I am loving being able to spend time discussing with other Christian women. Most of these ladies are new acquaintances for me. It is wonderful to see others perspective and know that they are truly living out their faith. There is one lady I will call her J. J has been a huge blessing to me. I am awed by her positive attitude and ways that she strives to look for Christ leading in her life. I feel a strong connection to her and am hoping to expand beyond the Bible Study into a friendship. Since I have few strong relationships with women I am struggling in how to do this. I do not want to smother her or come on too strong. I will be praying about this and asking what is the best way to proceed. Thankful for new relationships and the family of Christ.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 44 of 2014

Today is October 31st. Yes I am late again.

Today is Nevada Day and the kids are off of school for 5 days. Nevada Day is observed on the last Friday of October (voters changed it). Yes Halloween is also Nevada Day. Nevada became a state during the Civil War.

Today I am thankful for this state I live in. I was born in California and moved here when I was just three. I have seen the area I live in grow tremendously and I have a hard time imagining living anywhere else.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 43 of 2014

Today is October 23rd.

Today I am thankful that I am a stay at home mom. I love being available to help my kids throughout the day. Just yesterday I had to take an item that my youngest forgot up to school for him. Seeing them everyday before and after school is a blessing.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 42 of 2014 a recap

Today is October 18th

Yes it is Saturday again. Since starting my Thankfulness Thursday I have been challenged and that is a good thing. The Lord laid it upon my heart to post Thankfulness Thursday because he knew that I would struggle this year with being thankful. Since starting my Bible Study on Thursdays that is making it harder to post on time too. Today I am thankful that I have stayed the course and continued to post something every week. Here is a recap of the last 41 weeks.

1-Today I am thankful for the perseverance of my hubby in asking for a wife and being specific enough to write down little details that he wanted in his wife. I am thankful that the Lord provided for both my hubby and me to be "the one" for each other. I am thankful that after 26 years I still enjoy being with him and look forward to the next 26 years together.

I am thankful that we were finally able to get our youngest a bass guitar. I am thankful that the dentist was available last Friday for the hubby's crown replacement. I am thankful that I have sister lunch this Saturday. I am thankful that although my oldest is now sick he listens and does what I ask to get better.

5-I am so thankful I was already awake and that my bedroom is at the back of the house away from this noise.

My MIL is finally able to stay with us since we are somewhat better. Not one of us has had to go to the hospital for our illness. There is still food in the pantry and money in the bank. Tuesday will be a day off for me - MIL back at sis in law's, kids in school, hubby at work.

8-If you are reading this I am thankful for you.

seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives;
the one who seeks finds;
and to the one who knocks,
the door will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8
Matthew 7:7 has been my favorite verse for a while now.
God wants us to seek Him.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 41 of 2014

Today is October 9th.

Today I am thankful for Levothyroxine.

Several years ago I had routine blood work done and found out that my thyroid level was low (hypothyroidism). I had no symptoms. My doctor started me on Synthroid. I started at a normal (to most people) dose. After a few days I was aching all over and just wanted to stay in bed. I went back to my doctor to discuss my symptoms and he changed the medication to levothyroxine. I still had aches he then referred me to an endocrinologist. I was not aware of any history of thyroid disease in my family other than my mother's first cousin and her daughter. The endocrinologist did an ultrasound and diagnosed Hashimoto's Disease. Your antibodies attack your thyroid and kill it off. Your thyroid produces more to counteract the antibodies but it is not enough. The endocrinologist started me on a low dose and gradually increased the dosage every 6 months. WOW the thyroid controls so many things. It is different for everyone. I have varying symptoms and I blame a lot of things on my thyroid. I struggled at first about the idea of being required to take a pill every day for the rest of my life. It was (I guess) a loss of control. I must awake and take this pill every morning with a full glass of water and then wait an hour before I can have anything else. I sometimes do not even get my morning cup of coffee because of the other things that need to get done. I am thankful for medicines that help to keep our bodies regulated.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 39 of 2014 OOPS! it is Saturday

Today is September 27th

Today I am thankful for the cooler morning. I opened the house this morning and let the cool air come in (free air conditioning). If you would like more information about doTERRA or essential oils leave a comment or email me at livinginthemiddle@cox.net.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 37 of 2014

Today is September 11th.

Today I am thankful for our God who is in control. As we remember what happened thirteen years ago on this day. I pray we also remember that God has a plan and He will prevail.

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
 Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his feathers,

    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.

You will only observe with your eyes

and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.

For he will command his angels concerning you

    to guard you in all your ways;

they will lift you up in their hands,

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

You will tread on the lion and the cobra;

you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 36 of 2014

Today is September 4th.

Today I am thankful that the hubby has a job. He told me yesterday that he would be trying to get another part-time job to help pay down debt and to help pay for our son wanting to be in indoor drumline. It is hard for me. I want him to be patient as we are slowly able to pay down debt. Our family wants the time with him.

At least he has a job as there are still others trying to recover from the recession STILL. It is hard.

God is good and we thank him for his provisions.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 35 of 2014

Today is August 28th.

The past 3 weeks my oldest has been in band camp every day for 6 hours. Friday night we had a preview of what their competition marching program will be. It was wonderful. The next day we went up to Mt. Charleston for a family picnic. My hubby's 2 sisters, their husbands and his mother were all there. What a beautiful end to the summer. We ate junk food, took a hike and played Aggravation. So much fun. The boys started school this past Monday and it has been a whirlwind week. We are all looking forward to the 4 day weekend.

Me and the oldest on our hike.
Ready for instructions.

Today I am thankful for the opportunity that music provides for our children and for the way that music increases learning. I am also thankful for the wonderful cool (to us) summer we've had. Only a couple of 115 degree days and mostly in the low 100's.

Thursday, August 21, 2014

Thankfulness Thursday Week 34 of 2014

Today is August 21st.

Yesterday we had a lot of rain come down in 30 minutes. Flash flood season is in full swing. Today the sun is shining and the air is clean. Thank you Lord for the rain and the rainbow.

Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,  I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.  Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
Genesis 9:8-16

Thankfulness Thursday Week 33 of 2014

Today is August 14th.

Yesterday was the anniversary of my hubby's great aunt Georgia Lou's death. She was a great Christian influence to my hubby. When he was a baby he threw up on her but it didn't stop her from proclaiming that if anything happened to his mother she wanted that baby. The hubby's mom and Georgia Lou were close in age and like sisters. Hubby spent a few vacations in Austin, Texas with Georgia Lou and once we were married we visited her three times once just us and then one with our first child and last with both children. She loved our boys and they loved her. Today I am thankful for the influence that Georgia Lou had on all of our lives.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 31 of 2014

Today is July 31st.

So much to be thankful for but I am in a funk. Not often do I have down days...okay maybe it is weather related? Tonight I plan to attend a Parent Mixer for my son's band which has 350 students enrolled for the 2014-2015 school year. I am going alone since the hubby is sleeping for work tonight. I do not really like to go to things alone but I know that I need reach out to some of the other parents and/or reconnect with others that I have known since my oldest was in diapers. I am thankful that there will be dessert there.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 30 of 2014

Today is July 24th.

Today I am thankful for my mom. It is her birthday today. She is spending the week in her hometown in California. It is fair time and she will see her brother and several cousins this trip. She needs the getaway and time to regroup and have some time all to herself. My brother and his children (2 teenagers) live with her and her life if very busy helping all of them.

I talked to her this morning and she said it is about 80 degrees there. Today in the desert it will be 111. WOO HOO!! Time for some serious swimming.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 27 of 2014

Today is July 3rd.

Today I am thankful for the religious freedoms we have in the United States. My hubby thinks that soon we will not. I know the Lord is in control.

if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 26 of 2014

Today is June 26th.

The year is half over. It is currently over 105 degrees here in the desert. We are loving this dry heat.

This week I am participating in our church's Vacation Bible School (VBS). I have been a part of VBS 25 of the 29 years that I have been a Christian. It is a lot of work but so rewarding so see children learn about becoming a Christian.

Thank you Lord for helping workers to show children your love.

Thankfulness Thursday- but it's Friday again. Week 25 of 2014

Today is June 20th.

On Wednesday I met my best friend from high school for our bi-annual celebration. Her birthday is in December and mine is in June. We meet twice a year for a marathon talk and dinner. We have been close friends since juniors in high school. It is amazing to me that she has stuck by me because I know there have been times when I haven't been the best friend to her that I could have been. We live in the same valley but 30 miles away from each other. We have been to each others weddings, baby showers and relatives funerals. We want to see each other more but life is crazy for both of us. We are of different faiths but are respectful of the others faith. Her youngest child is 5 months older than my oldest.

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24

Thank you Lord for my good friend Janelle.

Thankfulness Thursday - but it's Friday - Week 24 of 2014

Today is Friday June 13th.

Today I am thankful that my hubby has had the last week off. It was not planned it is a leave without pay. It has been nice to have him home every night. The bonus came this morning when I went to pay bills and found out that he received retroactive pay and a cost of living increase. Praise God for supplying all our needs.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the
riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 23 of 2014

Today is June 5th.

It is my hubby's birthday so you can guess what I am thankful for today. Yep my hubby. It amazes me that God made this person and that he would be my husband. Do not misunderstand a marriage is hard work and we have had trials throughout our 25 years. There is not another that I would have wanted to endure these trials with and the good times too.

Thank you dear Lord for my husband. He is a blessing to me everyday.

Thankfulness Thursday - Week 22 of 2014

Today is May 29th.

Today I am thankful that after 25 years of marriage we have not bought a couch. This past week a blogger that I follow Kat at Grass Stains blogged about her new couch (sectional). I am thankful that I have not had to search for a couch. Since my hubby is the youngest of 8 - 4 on his mother's and 4 on his step-father's we have just received the old couches that the others have replaced with new. Woo hoo for Sure-fit slipcovers.

Update on my mom - everything is good repeat colonoscopy in a year and thyroid looks good.

Update on the youngest - he will be wearing a sling for 6 weeks and went back to school today.

Thankfulness Thursday Week 21 of 2014

Today is May 22nd.

Today I am thankful that my youngest is okay after fracturing his right clavicle yesterday afternoon. He received his first ride in an ambulance/paramedic vehicle to the pediatric hospital with no sirens.

I am also thankful that our 17 year old car that was backed into is repairable.

God is so good to us.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34
